The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the joint defence service training institute of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services i.e. the Indian Army , the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force train together before they go on to respective service academy for further pre-commission training. The NDA is located in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. It is the first tri-service academy in the world. The NDA campus is located about 17 km south-west of Pune city, north-west of Khadakwasla Lake with the Sinhagad Fort providing a panoramic backdrop.It spans 7,015 acres (28.39 km2)
The Administrative Headquarters of the NDA is named the Sudan Block, in honour of the sacrifices of Indian soldiers in the Sudan theatre during the East African Campaign. It was inaugurated by the then Ambassador of Sudan to India, Rahmatullah Abdulla, on 30 May 1959.The building is a 3-storey basalt and granite structure constructed with Jodhpur red sandstone.
NDA has an excellent infrastructure for all-round training of cadets and a vast array of facilities like spacious and well-maintained classrooms, well-equipped labs, two Olympic size swimming pools, a gymnasium, 32 football fields, 2 polo grounds, a cricket stadium and a number of squash and tennis courts.[17] The academic year is divided into two terms, viz. Spring (Jan. to May) and Autumn (July to Dec.). A cadet must undergo training for a total of six terms before graduating from the NDA.

- A comprehensive personality assessment by services selection board (SSB) is mandatory for selection into Defence officers cadre including Psychological Tests, Interview and Physical Efficiency Tests ( five days selection process)
- Age – 16.5 to 19.5 years on joining the course
- Educational qualifications – Plus Two with PCM or equivalent
- Three years under graduate training programme under J N U , Newdelhi at NDA
- On successful completion of graduation , pre commission training for two semesters at IMA (Army) , INA (Navy) and AFA ( Air force) with monthly scholarship of Rs.56100/-
- On successful completion of pre commission training grant of permanent Indian Commission as Class A Gazetted Officer in Indian Armed Forces
